I made this image at the end of the day, when the work of the ranch was slowing down and the light was taking over the landscape. The horses were gathered in the field, the mountains were falling into shadow, and the setting sun turned the air gold. What drew me to this moment was the balance between movement and stillness: the quiet presence of the rider in the foreground, the herd settling behind him, and the dust and grasses catching the last light. I wanted the image to feel both grounded and atmospheric. The strong silhouette of the horse and rider gives the scene structure, while the backlight softens the details and allows the mood to become the focus. Rather than showing every feature clearly, I chose to let the shapes, light, and space carry the story. For me, Between Dust and Dusk is about transition. It is the moment between labor and rest, between the heat of the day and the cool of evening, between the physical reality of ranch work and the almost dreamlike quality that golden light can create. The dust in the air, the silhouettes of the horses, and the distant mountains all contribute to a sense of time slowing down. This photograph also reflects my ongoing respect for horses and the people who work alongside them. There is strength in the scene, but also quietness. Nothing feels forced. The image is less about action than presence—the kind of presence that exists when humans, horses, land, and light briefly come together in a way that feels honest, fleeting, and complete.
