A Journey to the Self

This little self-portrait series was created as part of an exhibition with the theme "attitude" - the former meaning of it. In old German dictionaries you will find descriptions of attitude meaning an expressive, an artistic impression striving position by living figures. Sounds complicated, so: people were doing something like pantomime, dancing and acting all together in an artistic way, we don't know anymore - something like living pictures. They told stories of historical events, tales or state of minds in this way. Dictionaries pointed out the importance of a "meaningful moment" and the "emotional state". Attitude artists were often female, they had to be inventor and medium at the same time. A situation that I know very well as a self-portrait artist: being the creator, channeling an idea, while being the model as well. So I decided to create my own kind of "living pictures", that are going to show a specific "meaningful moment": the self-discovery, a journey we will all take at some time. Starting in the Golden 20s, where people had to suffer the aftermaths of WWI, but tried to conceal it with pomp and glamour, we start our jouney with a lost and hidden self under shining, but broken masks. To find ourselves we have to go deep inside us, symbolized by a travel back in time. Self-reflection occurs bare, without the glamour, but so many ways to search for us. When we finally find ourselves we should hold onto that tight. Following our true self will nourish our roots, it will be like a Rebirth, a Renaissance. We will bloom and flourish and be able to develope ourselves. When finishing our travel back to us, we'll reach a mysterious realm, symbolized by far away medieval times. We found our true form, the true self and are able to step out of the human and society made borders. We're able to set ourselves free to fly and reign our own little universe.
