I was in an overnight hide at a game preserve in South Africa staring into the featureless night when this White Rhinoceros mother and calf emerged quietly from the darkness and began to drink. Such a fantastic sight and to be able to see them so nearby and to watch them interact with each other was such a pleasure. Here the young rhino seems to be shedding a tear, emblematic to me of their precarious place in the world. With less than 10,000 mature individuals globally the iucnredlist has categorized the Southern White Rhinoceros as near threatened.
