This photo was taken in 2022 in Sabi Sands Game Reserve in South Africa. We saw this southern white rhino after he was wallowing in the mud to stay cool and get rid of his skin parasites. Both his horns had been preventive removed by vets as an anti-poaching measure. This is unfortunately a necessary evil by anti-poaching campaigners in South Africa. White rhinos have two horns on the end of their nose, the front horn is usually much larger than the rear one. These magnificent horns are the reason that at least one rhino is killed every day every year, with the extremely sad number of 499 rhino kills in South Africa in the year 2023. Rhino horn is highly sought after by some wealthy people in Asia, and increasingly in Vietnam, where it is considered as a symbol of power and wealth, associated with business success and high social status. On top of this comes the belief in the medical benefits of the horn. But the only truth is that rhino horn is made from keratin and has no proven medicinal properties.
