This photo is taken on the landing area during World War II code-named Gold Beach, in the small port of Arromanches les Bains, Normandy. Large remains of the port are still strewn across the beach area. You can see how large they are compared to the people standing next to it. The Mulberry harbours were floating artificial harbours designed and constructed by British military engineers during World War II. They were used to protect supply ships anchored off the coast of Normandy, north west France, after the D-Day landings of June 6, 1944. This loving couple looks with wonder at what still reminds us today of D-Day. The D-Day invasion is significant in history for the role it played in World War II. D-Day marked the turn of the tide for the control maintained by Nazi Germany; less than a year after the invasion, the Allies formally accepted Nazi Germany's surrender.
