Kukeri in Bulgaria – one of the oldest Bulgarian traditions from the time of the Thracians. Every winter, many people in Bulgaria dress up as mummers (monsters) and participate in mummers' games and festivals and various festive events. The Kukeri horo for driving away evil spirits is one of the most fascinating pre-Christian rituals in Bulgaria, recognized by UNESCO. Kukeri masquerade games are an ancient custom in the Bulgarian lands, witnessed for the first time in written sources from the time of the Thracians in the VI century.
