The Mary Poppins series of books was written by British author P. L. Travers. The first book was published in 1934 and was followed by seven more volumes until 1988. The stories tell of the magical adventures of the children Jane and Michael Banks with their nanny Mary Poppins. The umbrella symbolises Mary Poppins' authority and control. When she opens the umbrella, it often means that she is taking control of the situation and taking matters into her own hands.
