The creek used to be the city's lifeline. It was a place for trade, pearl digging, and getting to the Gulf and Indian Ocean. This area still has the feel of an earlier Dubai, where the past is not merely remembered but really lived. We just divided up our workshop group and boarded two separate boats on the day we finally got to visit Dubai Creek. I saw a sailing boat that I had never seen before as we crossed the creek. When it caught my attention, I didn't really think about it. Shortly after, I received a text on my phone that said, "Hey, did you see the movie set?" It struck me then—was that what I had just seen? I asked my boat driver to turn around to investigate. As we approached, it became clear that this was not a normal arrangement. The historic buildings that line the creek are constant reminders of Dubai's past. However, something was different this time. Probes: antiquated implements, rusty objects, and rustic accents that evoked a historical film market scene. This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness a small portion of historic Dubai come to life in a manner that is not achievable during a typical visit.
