Myanmar was emerging from nearly five decades of military rule. Structural violence, poverty, and ethnic conflict remained. Nothing was “resolved.” It was a controlled opening. Monks, civilians and nuns, tried to maintain ordinary life. These images show that paradox: political transition at the top, radical stability at ground level. Life went on, not because things were fine, but because it had to.
