Becoming the Character

This photographic series documents participants at a contemporary furry convention, where individuals gather to express identity, creativity, and community through anthropomorphic animal characters known as “fursonas.” These characters are often brought to life through elaborate handmade costumes called fursuits, each representing a personal design, personality, or artistic alter ego. The images capture moments throughout the event—from casual interactions and playful poses to quieter exchanges between participants. While the costumes immediately draw attention, the photographs focus on the people behind them: how individuals inhabit their characters, interact with others, and momentarily transform everyday spaces into environments of shared imagination. Within the convention setting, participants move between performance and authenticity. Some fully embody their characters through gestures and physical expression, while others casually transition between costume and conversation. This shifting boundary between persona and person becomes central to the visual narrative. Rather than presenting the event simply as spectacle, the series explores the social and creative aspects of the furry community. It highlights how costume, design, and role-play allow participants to experiment with identity and connection in a collaborative environment. “Becoming the Character” reflects on the ways people construct and inhabit alternate selves, using costume and performance as tools for self-expression, belonging, and creativity.
