In this work, Marcel van Beeck isolates the bucket wheel of a coal excavator and reimagines it as an uncanny architectural form. Removed from its industrial setting, the machine loses its purely functional legibility and begins to oscillate between monumental dome, Art Deco ornament and the eye-like aperture of an immense mechanical body. The image turns on this perceptual shift, through which an instrument of extraction acquires a ceremonial, almost civic presence. Central to this transformation is tonal inversion. By overturning the logic of light and shadow, van Beeck renders the bucket wheel as a kind of oculus - a circular opening historically associated with sacred architecture and the transmission of light. The excavator’s geometry is thus recast as technical ornament, its dark radial elements evoking both modern precision and the decorative language of an archaic modernity. The image exists in an unstable space between infrastructure, monument and symbol, where industrial force, architectural form and quasi-sacral resonance intersect.
