Some places seem shaped by time itself rather than by human hands. This image was made at first light on a November morning at La Roche Percée, near Vitrac in the Dordogne, a natural cliff of sculpted limestone, its arch worn through by centuries of wind and water, framing a sky igniting into pink and gold. At sunrise, standing before this ancient rock face slowly being embraced by vegetation, the scene feels both primordial and alive. The warm glow bleeding through the arch, the trees rooted in the crevices of the stone, the soft mist settling over the valley all conspire to give the place something between rawness and tenderness. It is a landscape that asks nothing of you except to stop, and to feel geological time as something beautiful rather than something vast and indifferent.
