From high on the Côte de Jor, the Dordogne reveals everything at once. This photo was made at sunrise on a November morning from one of the great natural belvederes of the Périgord, at the precise moment the sun crested the distant ridge, bursting into a sharp, radiating star above the valley, its rays fanning outward across the landscape below. The river traces its great unhurried arc from left to right, catching fragments of light in its bends, while ploughed fields, wooded banks, and scattered villages complete the timeless geography of the Dordogne valley in autumn. There is something almost ceremonial about this moment, the sun announcing itself to a landscape still half-asleep, the hills glowing briefly, brilliantly, before the ordinary light of day settles in. Standing on the clifftop grass, the scale of the valley below and the intensity of the light above creates a sensation that is equal parts humility and wonder. Meander Star is a landscape caught at the exact second it catches fire.
