For just a few weeks each spring, the forest floor comes alive in blue. This image was made at first light on a late March morning in the Forêt de Rambouillet, where wild bluebells had transformed the woodland into something barely believable; a continuous carpet of violet-blue stretching from the nearest fern at your feet all the way to the backlit canopy glowing at the far end of the forest. The air was cold and still, the light barely breaking through the trees, and yet the flowers had already opened, indifferent to the season's hesitation. The shooting position is deliberately low and close, almost among the flowers themselves, so that the viewer is not looking at the scene but standing inside it. A single fern unfurling in the foreground anchors the image in intimate detail before the eye travels back through the rolling carpet of blue into the warm, diffused light of the awakening canopy beyond. This is not spring as a concept. It is spring as a physical, overwhelming, fleeting fact.
