The morning catch

The image was taken during a morning out on the Thu Bon river near to Hoi An in central Vietnam. Having spent the best part of 2.5 years in and around Hoi An, I've gotten to know a number of people out there who can help me with getting access to these fishermen. The style of fishing itself is called ru and involves a large square net. The fishermen will go out at sunrise or in the afternoon to check their nets to see if any fish have been caught. One morning when I was out capturing images of the fisherman, i asked if I could go in his boat to watch him up close. He happily agreed so I put on the Canon 15-35mm RF to be able to get as wide as I could as well as having something a little closer to eye-length should it be needed. During my time underneath the net, he reached out with his cane and I caught him just at that moment. I looked at the back of the screen and knew I had a great image from the session amongst all the others that I had taken that morning.
