The bay never gave gifts; it demanded payment. Every morning, Manucho plunged into its murky waters equipped with nothing but worn fins, a pry bar, and lungs forged like iron bellows. Beneath the surface, visibility collapsed into a dense, greenish haze. The ocean floor was a graveyard of sleeping giants—forgotten ship hulls smothered in silt and barnacles. Manucho moved among their decaying bones, hunting for the valuable scrap locked in their bellies. Down here, time was measured in burning lungs and pounding blood. He wedged his bar beneath a twisted iron beam, levering against decades of rust while the dark current dragged at his limbs. Each dive was a raw calculation of risk against stamina, prying loose heavy wreckage bit by painstaking bit. After four hours of relentless effort, the battle ended. Exhausted, Manucho dragged the final piece of salvaged metal onto the beach. The haul was substantial—enough to trade for food and another week of survival. His muscles quivered, his skin pruned, salted, and etched with fresh red lines from jagged steel and sharp coral. Before turning toward home, he paused. Drenched and shivering, Manucho stared back out at the gray vastness of the bay. The ocean rolled on, vast and indifferent, but today it had yielded. He lifted his heavy burden, feeling the pride and hard-won sustenance torn from the bowels of the sea, and walked away.
