Passages

This series was made from the rear window of an InterCity train travelling from København (Copenhagen) to Skanderborg, Denmark, on 28 December 2025. Kind DSB guards allowed me into the conductor's compartment, where I photographed the receding landscape through the train's rear window using a cellphone. The journey unfolded between two homes. I was returning to the country of my birth—flat, winter-dark Denmark—from the young, jagged landscapes of New Zealand that have shaped most of my life. Fireworks flashed across the night sky from those unwilling to wait for New Year's Eve. Red and amber lights streamed into abstraction as the train raced west. Beneath the beauty lay apprehension. I was travelling to visit my brother, recently paralysed by a stroke. Each kilometre carried memories of what had been, uncertainty about what lay ahead, and reflections on the life I might have lived had I never left Denmark.
