Neptunian Vault stands as a monograph of choreographed, assisted self-portraits following the pure sculptural architecture, physical sensuality, and fluid spatial boundaries of the male form within the dark thresholds of the subterranean world. Operating as a profound expression of Neo-Mannerist surrealism, this visual spectacle utilizes the artist’s own body as a raw canvas to isolate states of absolute visual ambiguity. The narrative follows the muscular artist navigating an oppressive aquatic terroir of raw stone and concrete barriers where the traditional lines of classical anatomy seamlessly dissolve into the current. The compositions are defined by an opulent, deeply painterly optical illusion; though entirely monochromatic and struck as black-and-white files, a precise application of gold toning tricks the eye into perceiving a rich, multi-layered color palette. Reminiscent of sixteenth-century church murals, the visual narrative captures the naked, athletic form wrapped in a single long scarf that floats and flows gracefully around the body amidst currents and stone. The figure strains with formidable strength as if attempting to escape the architectural vault, alternating with decidedly sensual plates where high-intensity water reflections wrap the limbs as if mimicking the intricate lace patterns of sheer nylon hosiery. This visual tension builds across the sequence, culminating in a stark, minimalist finale where the figure weightlessly floats away into the oblivion of a deep, dark sea. This entire visual lexicon is achieved through a meticulous dedication to in-camera optics and physical performance. Conceived, lit, and structurally engineered in-camera by Kelly William Wright, the physical performance is executed within subterranean water vaults, with the shutter tripped by oceanic artist Marie-Claude Boutet. The fantastical seemingly impossible effects were achieved by harmonizing the uniquely exotic characteristics of the physical location, natural lighting, high intensity water reflections and challenging creative camera angles — all required to capture these complex, full-anatomical compositions without the aid of compositing software, generative AI, image layering, montage imaging or digital texturing.
