From the Theater of Twisted Vanities monograph, the Chrysopoeia Distortions marks a profound, alchemical evolution within the overarching thesis of the Theater of Twisted Vanities. Utilizing a heavy, golden-tinted color palette reminiscent of historic turn-of-the-twentieth-century Orotone plates and the exaggerated distorted reflections of André Kertész, this continuous portfolio transforms the human body into a series of opulent, mesmerizing, seemingly impossible fluid abstractions. Presented as a theatrical spectacle within framed borders and vignettes, the flesh is cast as liquid metals—entwining submerged silks with physical kinetic forces to achieve a deep beautification of the human form existing in flux between two opposite worlds: the deep fluid underworld of the submerged, and torsos or limbs breaking through the surface as if suddenly frozen in gold as they emerge. Expanding upon the radical visual language established by André Kertész’s legendary 1932 Distortions, these compositions push the boundaries of spatial structure to new, mythic heights. The forms twist and dissolve into beautiful, sometimes unsettling imagery, creating an intense atmosphere that borders on a biological alchemy of the human form. The resulting plates offer an elegant balance between pristine tonal beauty and an invitation to expand psychological boundaries, establishing a completely distinct visual presence in the global landscape of photographic art. Crucially, this entire visual lexicon is executed without compromise. Every fantastical distortion, liquid-metal effect, and structural transformation is accomplished exclusively through pure physical, optical, and mechanical means. Wet silk suspension systems, natural springs with crystal-clear turbulent waters, calculated overhead reflections, and unique spring-bottom patterns are the tools of choice. Captured entirely in-camera without the aid of digital manipulation software, artificial intelligence, layering, montage, image generation, or post-production compositing, The Chrysopoeia Distortions stand as uncorrupted documents of light and performance.
