Altaf Hossain, better known as Dukho Mia, was born on 18 October 1966 in rural Bangladesh. His birth brought both joy and heartbreak. After losing several children before him, his parents were devastated to discover that their newborn son had been born without both hands. While the family struggled with grief, his grandfather believed the child had a greater purpose. He named him "Dukho Mia," meaning the man of sorrow. Despite his disability, Dukho Mia's father refused to let his son believe that life had ended before it had begun. Using a bamboo stick as a pen and banana leaves as paper, he patiently taught his son to write with his feet. Day after day, Dukho Mia practiced by gripping the pen between his toes until writing became natural. His determination paid off when he ranked first in his class during primary school, proving that perseverance could overcome physical limitations. With the unwavering support of his parents, he completed his education, earning an honours degree. However, finding employment was far more difficult. After years of unsuccessful job searches, he chose a different path. He began teaching children in his village through private tutoring, and his dedication quickly earned the trust of local families. In 2007, with the encouragement of his wife, who allowed him to use her land, he founded Protiva Dukho Mia Kindergarten. What started as a small rural school has grown into a respected educational institution. Today, around 150 students study there from Nursery to Grade Five. Many of his former students have gone on to universities, medical colleges, and engineering institutions, a success that fills him with pride. Although he sometimes wonders why he was born without hands, his faith gives him peace. He believes that what truly defines a person is not what they lack, but what they choose to do with what they have. Today, Dukho Mia believes he no longer lives without hands. He sees his hands in the thousands of students whose lives he has touched. Their success, respect and love have become the hands he never had.
