From the Theater of Twisted Vanities monograph, the Chthonic Liturgies stands as an uncompromising, visceral descent into the darkest psychological shadows of mortal suffering, demonic threat, and transgressive physical vulnerability. Conceived as a series of choreographed, assisted self-portraits, the artist serves as model in this performance ensemble, using his own lifelong athletic physique as a raw sculptural canvas. This chameleonic performance shifts fluidly—from haunting characters of menacing dread to figures bound and persecuted by their own dark intentions. Broadening the overarching thesis of the Theater of Twisted Vanities beyond the elegant restraints of organic decomposition and transmutation, The Chthonic Liturgies confront the viewer with an intense, ritualistic landscape of subterranean trial. Through a raw, challenging visual vocabulary that invokes the primeval forces of the mythic underworld, the masculine form is subjected to systematic conditions of absolute thematic isolation. The compositions within this act function as dark, confrontational documents. Menacing, predatory entities loom from the heavy sepia voids and fabric barriers, actively threatening the space of the viewer, while the nude male form is discovered bound in stark, crucifix-style postures of apparent torture and profound physical surrender. An intense, underworld eroticism saturates the series; the raw, uncompromised anatomy is laid bare, yet partially veiled through the strategic placement of wet semi-transparent fabrics. This fluid layer of drapery heightens the voyeurism of the trial, creating a painterly tension between classical high-art form and forbidden esoteric taboos. This entire visual lexicon is achieved through a meticulous dedication to in-camera optics and physical performance. Every terrifying distortion, textural overlay, and expression of bodily constraint is accomplished exclusively through pure physical, optical, and mechanical means. Silk suspension and submersion systems are deployed to create the fantastical effects. Captured entirely in-camera without the aid of digital manipulation software, artificial intelligence, or post-production compositing, these plates stand as uncorrupted artifacts of light and performance.
