Butterflies gather on the head of a yacaré caiman to drink the mineral-rich fluid from its eyes — a behaviour rarely witnessed and even more rarely photographed. For a few minutes the continent's most efficient ambush predator becomes a landing platform. I stayed low and still, shooting at eye level from the riverbank, until the caiman opened its jaws and the composition resolved itself Photographed in Pantanal. No bait, lure or manipulation was used.
