A tawny eagle holds a live snake — the tail gripped in its beak, the head still writhing beneath its talon — while looking away from the prey, watching for something outside the frame. The ground is recently burnt and already regrowing. Raptors hunt these burns, where the fire has stripped the cover their prey depends on. This is the moment before the outcome is decided.
