For a fraction of a second, water stands up. Struck on a wet stone path, it gathers into a form that holds — a rim, a ring of spires, a shape the eye reads as a crown before it reads as water. Then it is gone. The reign lasts a few thousandths of a second. No studio, no black backdrop. This crown rises among grass stems in a public botanical study garden, under a sprinkler installed to water the plants, on stone walked on by strangers for years. Nothing here intended a crown. It arrives anyway, unasked for and unattended. Photography cannot slow the collapse. It can only let the coronation be seen.
