On an opportunistic visit to a pond in upstate New York, I noticed a bird, an Eastern Kingbird. Over the course of the next 30 to 45 minutes she attentively tended to two youngsters in her nest nearby, diligently and repetitively bringing them insects. Back and forth, back and forth. On one occasion, she brought back this seemingly enormous blue spotted dragonfly. One of the lucky chicks got the whole thing. Looking back at my photos afterwards, I loved the motion of the mother’s arrival and the franticness of the chick’s wide mouths, contrasted against the beautifully delicate shadow of the dragonflies wings on the mother‘s breast.
