Thor’s Well is a geographic anomaly on America’s Oregon coast, a tidal pool that’s also a 20 foot deep lava tube that sucks waves below. Thor’s Well challenges the photographer in several ways: the event only happens at high tide – when tidal pools are most dangerous. Plus the light is best at sunset, which doesn’t generally align with high tide. Capturing that gaping "well" requires the photog to go wide angle and get close, to catch a moment as the wave rush in. Capturing the power of the waves was key and I shot at 1/40 sec to suggest that motion. The painterly brushwork and layering added a sense of depth, immediacy, mystery.
