1. Can you introduce yourself and talk about how you got into photography?
My name is Verena, I work for the past 20 years as a midwife in Austria. My journey took an unexpected turn as I delved into the world of photography within the delivery room. Captivated by the raw emotional moments of childbirth, I embarked on a mission to immortalize these precious instances for parents. What began as a focus solely on birth photography gradually evolved into a comprehensive exploration of pregnancy and infant photography. However, it was the realm of underwater photography that truly captured my artistic imagination, drawing me into its depths and allowing me to express my creativity in new and captivating ways.
2. Where did you study photography?
I am a self-taught individual when it comes to photography. I honed my skills through independent learning and experimentation. Along the way, I sought guidance from various photographers to further refine my craft. Notable among these learning experiences were coaching sessions with photographers such as Christian Zink in Weimar and Delphine Denans from France. These interactions enriched my understanding of photography and contributed to shaping my unique style and perspective.
3. Do you remember your first shot? What was it?
When asked if I recall the first picture I ever took, my answer would be no. Photography has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember, so singling out the very first image is a bit of a challenge. However, I do have a distinct memory of the first photograph for which I received an award. Surprisingly, it was captured using a mobile phone and edited right on the device itself. This recognition marked a significant milestone in my photographic journey and highlighted the potential of modern technology in the world of art and creativity.
4. What equipment do you use?
I work with a Canon camera paired with a Nauticam underwater housing to delve into the captivating realm of underwater photography. This combination allows me to seamlessly merge my passion for photography with the mesmerizing underwater world. The Canon camera provides me with the technical capabilities and creative flexibility I need to capture the intricate beauty beneath the surface, while the Nauticam housing ensures that my equipment remains safe and functional in aquatic environments. This setup has become an extension of my artistic expression, enabling me to create stunning visual narratives that celebrate the mystique of underwater scenes.
5. What do you hope to achieve?
My goal in my photographic journey is to evoke deep emotions and connections through my images. Ultimately, I aim to create a lasting impact on the viewer, stirring feelings and memories that resonate with them. I hope that my work can inspire others to appreciate the profound beauty and emotions present in every stage of life, and to see the world through a lens of wonder and empathy. I draw from my experiences of being present during the most intimate and transformative moments in people's lives. This vantage point allows me to capture not only the visual aspects but also the emotional undercurrents that make each story unique.
Incorporating the technical aspects of photography with the emotional essence of the human experience, I strive to create visuals that resonate on a profound level.
