Mats Andersson studied photo at the Industrial Art School in Gothenburg in the late 1980s. This was followed by a job as Art Director and Photographer in the advertising industry. Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2016 – winner Black & White. Wildlife Photographer of the Year in Scandinavia 2016 (NNPC). All over winner NNPC in 2016 (Nordic Nature Photo Contest). Wildlife Photographer of the Year in Sweden 2016. Photography Magazine Practical Photography, UK, wrote in 2020: "The artful dodger. Combining a profound artistic flair with a love of analogue darkroom techniques, Swedish legend Mats Andersson has turned his love of wildlife and landscapes into a hugely successful second career."
