Photographer's Profile
Canada
David Carey is a photographic artist based in Port Moody, British Columbia, Canada. He holds a Master of Fine Arts in Photography from the Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts at Bard College in New York. His work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions across Canada and the United States and has appeared in Photo Life magazine. In addition to his photographic work, he has also published an illustrated children’s book, reflecting his enduring interest in visual storytelling and imaginative worlds. Carey’s artistic practice is grounded in a fine art approach that blends formal composition with whimsical, narrative elements. Many of his projects explore themes rooted in childhood imagination and the surprising intersections between the ordinary and the fantastical. He often uses constructed scenes, 3D objects, and close-up perspectives to invite viewers into miniature universes where everyday life is gently transformed by the presence of the unexpected. His portfolio Dinosaurs, imagines what life would be like living with dinosaurs in a current urban environment. In Bookworms 2.0, tiny, introverted creatures make their homes inside books, constructing intricate contraptions inspired by the stories they inhabit. His recent series, The Gnomes of Port Moody, captures the imagined lives of forest gnomes as they cautiously integrate with human communities. The image submitted for the European Photo Awards is part of Carey’s series The Secret Life of Plants, created during the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic. Using extreme close-up photography, he reveals not just botanical detail but moments of tenderness, mystery, love and game playing unfolding within petals and leaves. This body of work reflects his fascination with overlooked spaces and his belief in the healing power of nature, imagination, and visual storytelling. Whether exploring books, blossoms, gnomes or dinosaurs, Carey’s photographs invite viewers to slow down, look closer, and discover new narratives unfolding in the everyday world.
