In Devotion, I wanted to capture a quiet moment of trust between a rider, her horse, and her dog at rest in the open landscape. There is no dramatic action here, no speed or spectacle. Instead, the strength of the image comes from stillness—the kind of stillness that reveals the depth of relationships built over time. The rider’s hand rests gently on the dog while her horse stands close beside her, calm and grounded. Each figure seems connected by habit, care, and mutual understanding. This is the kind of devotion that exists in the working world of horses and ranch life: practical, steady, and earned. It is not sentimental, but it is deeply felt. I chose black and white to strip the scene down to its essential elements—texture, light, gesture, and expression. Without color, the viewer can focus on the shapes of the horse’s body, the softness of the dog’s posture, the rider’s bowed head, and the rugged detail of the surrounding brush. The landscape is not just a backdrop; it is part of the story. The sage, grasses, distant hills, and open sky place these companions within an environment that feels both harsh and beautiful. For me, this image speaks to the bond between humans and animals, especially in places where daily life depends on respect, patience, and trust. The horse, the dog, and the rider each have a role, but in this moment, those roles soften into companionship.
